Biography

Robert H. Socolow, a member of the Princeton University faculty since 1971, is professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering; from 1979 to 1997, he was director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies.  Dr. Socolow teaches in the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. 

His current research is focused on global carbon management, the hydrogen economy, and fossil-carbon sequestration.  He is also co-director of the Carbon Mitigation Initiative at Princeton, a multidisciplinary investigation of the use and treatment of fossil fuels in a carbon-constrained world. 

Dr. Socolow earned a B.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University in theoretical, high-energy physics and was an assistant professor of physics at Yale University.  He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.  In 2003, he received the Leo Szilard Lectureship Award from the American Physical Society, and in 2004, he was made a lifetime National Associate of the National Academies.
